Fortunately, this is exactly the sort of crisis higher education was created to solve.

“How about ‘a lot’?”

Perfect.

Jake watches from a safe distance and reaches the only reasonable conclusion:

“College is working.”

“Coffee’s on.”

Sarah arrives.

“Tea’s there too.”

Then Ryan comes through the door.

“No free pizza.”

Something has changed.

Not long ago, Jake was standing outside wondering what this strange little place on Commercial Street even was. Now the Station knows who drinks coffee, who drinks tea—and who has developed a reputation for asking about free food.

Even our still-unnamed architecture student has found the big table.

Nobody planned a club. Nobody organized a meeting. Nobody even decided they were going to hang out together.

They just kept showing up.

“So… are we regulars now?”

Apparently so.

Because there comes a point when a place stops being somewhere you discovered...

…and becomes somewhere you belong.

A new semester calls for a system.

Ryan has one.

Everything for every class goes into the backpack. Books. Notes. Supplies. Everything.

The logic is flawless:

“Can’t forget anything.”

There is only one small problem.

He forgot his calculator.

Fortunately, Ryan isn’t discouraged. Great systems aren’t abandoned merely because they encounter reality.

“The system is evolving.”

And perhaps that’s not a bad description of the first few weeks of college—or, for that matter, most of life.

Herod made a promise.

A very big promise.

And when the moment came to admit he had spoken foolishly, there were people watching.

That may be one of the most painfully human moments in this Sunday’s Gospel, Mark 6:17–28.

ROOK moves the stakes somewhere considerably safer: the college dining hall.

Ryan is absolutely certain he’s getting an A.

So certain, in fact, that he promises pizza to everyone if he doesn’t.

Then the grades are posted.

B-plus.

Jake offers him an escape.

Ryan looks around the room.

“They heard me.”

There’s the trap.

Sometimes pride isn’t what makes us boast. Sometimes it’s what keeps us from admitting afterward that the boast was foolish.

Fortunately for Ryan, the only thing at stake is pizza.

Nope.

She’s drawing the building for the simplest possible reason:

She likes it.

For Jake, this requires a little processing. Who voluntarily does something that looks suspiciously like schoolwork?

But there’s a difference between choosing a major because it seems practical and discovering something you would happily do even if nobody gave you an assignment.

Maybe that’s not how you end up somewhere.

Maybe it’s how you know you belong there.

Sarah stopped everything.

For a goalkeeper, that makes it a pretty good day.

But Jake and Ryan are beginning to suspect that Sarah’s goalkeeper instincts don’t end when practice does. She’s still watching. Still reacting. Still ready for whatever comes her way.

So Ryan conducts one final test.

“Free pizza.”

Sarah’s head snaps around.

“Yep. Still on.”

There are some things even a goalkeeper can’t ignore.

“Where?”

Another student has found The Little Station.

She needs coffee.

She needs a table.

And, being an architecture student, she also happens to have a building and a set of drawings that need somewhere to go.

Fortunately, the Little Station has a big table.

Unfortunately, Jake, Sarah, and Ryan were using it.

Nobody formally invites her into the group. Nobody needs to.

She simply finds some table space and gets to work.

That may be how places like this become important—not because someone creates a program or organizes a gathering, but because people keep walking through the door and discovering there’s room for them.

Jake finally opened the door.

Now he, Sarah, and Ryan are inside The Little Station on Commercial Street for the first time.

There are books. A microphone. An ON-AIR light. A chessboard. A few comfortable chairs. And coffee.

But what exactly is this place?

“Is this a radio station?”

“Sometimes.”

Sometimes people talk. Sometimes they listen. And when there’s something worth hearing, sometimes they turn on the microphone.

Jake is intrigued.

Sarah is curious.

Ryan has already figured it out.

Free coffee.

The door is open now.

And we have a feeling they’ll be staying awhile.

The radio isn’t playing this time. There’s only a little storefront on Commercial Street, a COME IN sign in the window—and a door he still hasn’t quite opened.

Then Sarah appears.

Then Ryan.

Apparently, curiosity is contagious.

And so, after several days of walking past The Little Station, Jake finally reaches for the handle.

JINGLE.

Some doors lead into buildings.

Others lead into stories.

Jesus was a master storyteller.

A narrow door. A camel and a needle. A lamp under a basket. A beam in your eye.

Images ordinary people could see, remember—and perhaps even smile about.

This Sunday, Ryan encounters the narrow door rather literally.

He has everything he needs.

And quite a few things he doesn’t.

THUNK.

Sometimes the Gospel catches us that way. We laugh at the predicament—and then realize there might be something in it for us.

Maybe getting through the narrow door requires putting a few things down.

Ryan eventually gets the message.

His coach may not.

The Open Door is always on

Tonight is Tall Girl’s last night at home before heading back to Benedictine for sophomore year.

She’s moving into the dorm early for Athletes Week with Raven Dance—and she’s especially excited about the new group of freshman dancers arriving this year.

For her, it’s the beginning of another year: new dancers, new friends, new adventures, and a campus that already feels like home.

For Dad?

He’s still on “last night at home.”

That may be one of the strange things about watching your children grow up. They’re already looking through the open door at what comes next while you’re standing there for just another moment, remembering all the doors they’ve already walked through.

Always a Rook. ♜ Always Home.

ROOK — little stories from the Benedictine years.

There are a thousand things a freshman expects on move-in day: cars packed to the roof, nervous parents, boxes that seemed much lighter at home, and the first bewildering attempt to figure out where everything goes.

They probably don’t expect the president of the college to be standing at the entrance waiting for them.

But at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, President Stephen Minnis has made a tradition of greeting arriving students and families as they come onto campus.

It’s a small gesture. And perhaps that’s precisely why it matters.

Before the first class. Before the first football game. Before the first late-night conversation with a roommate. Before Benedictine becomes home rather than simply college—someone is already at the gate saying:

Different Mountains

The Tall Girl has returned from Outward Bound.

She came back with stories of rain, long miles, cold nights, and mountains that seemed impossible to climb. But like most worthwhile adventures, the greatest lesson wasn’t about the wilderness. It was about perspective.

College life has its own mountains—deadlines, friendships, disappointments, and the occasional stubborn printer. They rarely look as dramatic, yet they often feel just as large.

This week’s ROOK is a reminder that experience quietly changes the way we see ordinary things. Sometimes wisdom isn’t learning how to conquer every obstacle. Sometimes it’s simply learning which obstacles deserve our attention in the first place.

This week’s ROOK celebrates that bittersweet moment every parent eventually faces: watching children leave home—not because they’re running away, but because they’re ready for the adventures ahead.
