There is something gloriously unreasonable in the Annunciation. The whole modern world is forever looking for the large lever, the obvious machine, the public revolution. God, when he means to turn the universe upside down, sends not an army but an angel; not to Caesar, but to a village girl.
That is because God loves not only power, but proportion. He likes great things to begin in little things, so that no man may confuse the hammer with the hand that lifts it. Nazareth is a scandal to all worldly ambition because it proves that the hinge of history may be hidden in a household.
The Incarnation begins not with noise, but with courtesy: Heaven asks. Mary answers.
And because she answers, the unanswerable enters time.
The striking thing is not merely that Mary was pure, though she was; nor merely that she was humble, though she was that too. It is that she was free. The Almighty, who made the stars without asking them, would not force the door of a maiden’s heart.
That is the splendor of the feast: omnipotence waits upon obedience.
And so the Annunciation is not only Mary’s story—it is ours. Grace always comes first. But grace still asks.
We are all forever standing in little Nazareths of our own.
The tragedy is not that heaven is silent; it is that we are busy.
The glory is that one quiet yes, spoken truthfully, can still let Christ into the world.
