There are some plays that announce themselves with grand events and dramatic revelations.
And there are others that quietly open the front door of an ordinary house, invite us inside, and remind us that the greatest dramas often unfold around a kitchen table.
Tonight we present Come Laughing Home, a delightful BBC Saturday Night Theatre production by the celebrated writing team of Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall, best known for Billy Liar.
Set in an ordinary Northern English household, the play begins with wonderfully familiar domestic squabbles—arguments over the electric bill, unfinished hobbies, clutter, and everyday annoyances. But beneath the laughter lies a family facing unexpected news that forces every member of the household to confront disappointment, responsibility, love, and forgiveness.
Waterhouse and Hall possessed a remarkable gift: they could make audiences laugh at the smallest details of everyday life while gently revealing the hopes and heartbreaks hidden beneath them.
This is not a comedy built around punchlines.
It is a comedy built around people.
You’ll recognize the father proudly constructing model ships, the mother trying to keep the household together, young people longing for lives beyond the housing estate, and the complicated mixture of affection and frustration that exists in nearly every family.
The dialogue sparkles with authentic Yorkshire wit, but beneath the humor is a thoughtful meditation on growing up, changing expectations, and the surprising resilience of ordinary people.
Like so many of the finest BBC radio dramas, Come Laughing Home reminds us that home is never simply a place.
It is the collection of people who know us best—and love us anyway.
