✦ Meditation
There is much talk of love in the world, and not a little confusion.
We imagine love to be a feeling that warms us, a possession that comforts us, or a contract that protects us. But love, if it is real, is neither a cushion nor a cage. It is a flame. And a flame exists only by giving itself away.
The modern mind wishes to secure love as it secures insurance—measured, guaranteed, returnable. But Christ speaks of love as loss: “Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Love does not tighten its grip; it opens its hands.
To love is to accept vulnerability. It is to admit that the beloved can wound us, disappoint us, or even depart from us. Yet this very risk is what makes love luminous. A heart wrapped in iron may be safe, but it is also silent.
On this day when the world celebrates romance, the Christian remembers something sterner and sweeter: love is sacrifice. It is the daily decision to give rather than grasp, to bless rather than bargain.
The curious truth is that the heart grows by spending itself. It is not diminished by generosity; it is enlarged by it. For the God who is Love does not lose Himself in giving—He multiplies Himself.
And so we begin the day not by demanding love, but by offering it.
