Our Lady of Fatima: The Miracle, the Message, and Broken Mary

From three shepherd children in 1917 Portugal to the Golden Age of Radio and Kevin Matthews’ remarkable story of Broken Mary

In 1917, three shepherd children outside the village of Fatima reported encounters that would become one of the most remarkable stories of the twentieth century. Thousands eventually came. Newspapers took notice. And on October 13, an enormous crowd gathered in the rain for what became known as the Miracle of the Sun.

But the spectacle was never really the heart of Fatima.

In this Listen with Gilbert deep dive, we return to the events of 1917 and then follow the extraordinary journey of Fatima into the age of radio. We listen to the ways Ave Maria Hour, Family Theater, The Fatima Story, Mother of All and Lux Radio Theatre brought the story into American homes—with voices, music and imagination making the unseen strangely immediate.

Along the way, we consider what witnesses actually reported, what the children said they experienced, and the message that remained when the crowds went home: prayer, the Rosary, repentance, conversion and peace. We also look briefly toward Lourdes and Guadalupe and the larger tradition of Marian devotion.

Then the story returns to radio in an unexpected way.

Decades later, Chicago radio personality Kevin Matthews found a damaged statue of Mary discarded beside a dumpster. Matthews himself was struggling with illness and a life that seemed to be coming apart. His encounter with that broken statue began the remarkable story now known as Broken Mary.

A broken statue. A broken radio man. Three children in a troubled world. And a message that refuses to disappear.

Why does Fatima still matter?

Perhaps the answer lies not in the spectacle of the sun, but in the quieter invitation beneath it: pray, turn back, seek peace—and never assume that something broken has ceased to be precious.
