There are great moments in the history of engineering.
The arch. The aqueduct. The elevator. The suspension bridge.
And now, apparently, door handles.
Benedictine College announced this week that the new pass-through at St. Benedict Hall is fully accessible in both directions now that handles have been installed on the north-side doors.
For most people, this is a useful little campus update.
For Ryan, it is the discovery of a shortcut to “everywhere.”
Maggie makes the mistake of questioning his understanding of architecture. Jake makes the mistake of trying to explain what ordinary doors are. Tall Girl arrives late enough to hear only the important part.
And somewhere along the way, an entirely new academic discipline is born.
College life isn’t made only from the big events—the games, lectures, performances and milestones. Sometimes it’s the tiny change everyone notices because they’ve walked past the same inconvenient door a hundred times.
And sometimes somebody finally installs the handle.
