G. K. Chesterton’s small, unassuming priest has spent more than a century wandering into locked rooms, country houses, quiet villages and very complicated human hearts. He rarely looks like the cleverest man in the room.
That is usually his advantage.
Now we’re trying something new at Chesterton Radio.

Beginning soon, we’ll be publishing original illustrated Father Brown mysteries here on the Chesterton Radio Substack—new stories inspired by the world and spirit of Chesterton’s classic detective.
These aren’t adaptations of existing Father Brown stories. They are new mysteries created for Chesterton Radio, presented as an old-fashioned black-and-white illustrated serial.
One page each week.
One continuing mystery.
And, when the final page arrives, a complete story that can live again in audio on Chesterton Radio.
Our first case is:
The Bell That Rang at Midnight
For twenty-three years, the great bell called Gabriel has been silent.
The tower is locked.
The bell rope is gone.
Then, at precisely midnight, the bell rings.
By morning, a man is dead.
Everyone wants to know how a bell without a rope could possibly have rung.
Father Brown has another question.
Why did someone need the whole village to hear it?
That’s where our first mystery begins.
We’re building this as a companion to ROOK, our ongoing comic strip—but with an entirely different character. ROOK is contemporary, spare and comic. Father Brown will be atmospheric, detailed and mysterious: old churches, railway stations, village streets, country houses, secrets, sins and the occasional impossible crime.
At the center of it all will remain Chesterton’s remarkable little priest and his peculiar conviction that the best way to understand a crime is first to understand the person who committed it.
