Tonight, on Chesterton Radio, we’re heading to the beach with Jack Benny.
We were looking for a Sunday Night Benny adventure we haven’t played before, and this one seemed just right.
In “A Day at the Beach,” Jack trades the familiar studio surroundings for a seaside outing with Mary Livingstone, Rochester, Don Wilson, Dennis Day, and the Beverly Hills Beavers. The plan is simple: sunshine, fresh air, and a pleasant picnic by the ocean.
Of course, this is Jack Benny.
Before long, an ordinary day at the beach becomes another opportunity for Jack’s famous thrift, wounded dignity, and wonderfully exasperating relationship with everyone around him.
Originally broadcast in May 1954 and later rebroadcast in 1955, A Day at the Beach is classic Benny at his best: relaxed, character-driven comedy where the pleasure comes less from the plot than from spending half an hour with people who somehow feel like old friends.
So, pull up a chair, pour something cold, and spend Sunday night with Jack and the gang.
