At precisely 2:17 a.m., Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson heard it for themselves.
A bell ringing through the wet streets of Clerkenwell.
There is still one rather serious problem:
The church has no bell.
Watson is certain of what he heard—and Holmes agrees.
But hearing a bell and knowing where it came from are two very different things.
“You heard a bell, Watson.”
“Yes.”
“You looked at a church.”
For the first time, Holmes stops searching for another clue and begins questioning the assumption at the center of the entire case.
Perhaps the mystery isn’t how a bell can ring in a tower where no bell exists.
Perhaps everyone has simply been looking in the wrong direction.
And when Watson asks where they’re going next, Holmes gives him an answer that only deepens the mystery:
“Back to the beginning.”
