✨ Paradox of the Day
The morning feels small, but eternity never begins in a hurry.
✠ Opening
Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim Thy praise.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
📖 Morning Psalm
Psalm 5 — Douay-Rheims
Give ear, O Lord, to my words, understand my cry.
Hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God.
For to Thee will I pray: O Lord, in the morning Thou shalt hear my voice.
In the morning I will stand before Thee, and I will see:
Because Thou art not a God that willest iniquity.
Neither shall the wicked dwell near Thee:
Nor shall the unjust abide before Thy eyes.
Thou hatest all the workers of iniquity:
Thou wilt destroy all that speak a lie.
The bloody and the deceitful man the Lord will abhor.
But as for me in the multitude of Thy mercy,
I will come into Thy house;
I will worship towards Thy holy temple, in Thy fear.
Conduct me, O Lord, in Thy justice: because of my enemies, direct my way in Thy sight.
For there is no truth in their mouth: their heart is vain.
Their throat is an open sepulchre; they dealt deceitfully with their tongues: judge them, O God.
Let them fall from their devices: according to the multitude of their wickedness cast them out: for they have provoked Thee, O Lord.
But let all them be glad that hope in Thee:
They shall rejoice for ever, and Thou shalt dwell in them.
And all they that love Thy name shall glory in Thee:
For Thou wilt bless the just.
O Lord, Thou hast crowned us, as with a shield of Thy good will.
📖 Second Psalm
Psalm 6 — Douay-Rheims
O Lord, rebuke me not in Thy indignation, nor chastise me in Thy wrath.
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak:
Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.
And my soul is troubled exceedingly: but Thou, O Lord, how long?
Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul:
O save me for Thy mercy’s sake.
For there is no one in death, that is mindful of Thee: and who shall confess to Thee in hell?
I have laboured in my groanings, every night I will wash my bed: I will water my couch with my tears.
My eye is troubled through indignation: I have grown old amongst all my enemies.
Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity:
For the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.
The Lord hath heard my supplication: the Lord hath received my prayer.
Let all my enemies be ashamed, and be very much troubled: let them be turned back, and be ashamed very speedily.
🌅 Gospel Canticle
Benedictus — Luke 1:68-79 (Douay-Rheims)
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because He hath visited and wrought the redemption of His people:
And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David His servant:
As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, who are from the beginning:
Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us:
To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember His holy testament,
The oath, which He swore to Abraham our father, that He would grant to us,
That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve Him without fear,
In holiness and justice before Him, all our days.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways:
To give knowledge of salvation to His people, unto the remission of their sins:
Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:
To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.
📜 Scripture Reading
Mark 6:53-56 — Douay-Rheims
And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Genezareth, and set to the shore.
And when they were gone out of the ship, immediately they knew Him:
And running through that whole country, they began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard He was.
And whithersoever He entered, into towns or into villages or cities, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought Him that they might touch but the hem of His garment: and as many as touched Him were made whole.
🙏 Morning Prayer
Lord Jesus,
As the people of Genezareth ran to touch the hem of Thy garment,
so we run to Thee at the beginning of this day.
Walk through the towns of our duties,
the villages of our conversations,
and the hidden streets of our thoughts.
Heal what is weak.
Strengthen what is weary.
Awaken what is sleeping.
And let us rise from prayer ready to follow Thee.
Amen.
✨ Chestertonian Reflection
Morning prayer is the great act of defiance against gloom. The sun rises every day not because the universe is a machine, but because God has not yet grown tired of us. Psalm 5 is a man showing up before breakfast to say, “I am still here, Lord.” Psalm 6 is a man admitting, “I am still weak, Lord.” And the Gospel shows people who do not wait for worthiness — they simply reach for Christ.
That is the boldness of faith: not brilliance, but persistence. Not perfection, but return. Every dawn is God saying, “Let us begin again.”
And the secret Chesterton knew is this:
God never says, “We already did morning yesterday.”
To Him, the sunrise is always new —
and so, by grace, are we.
