The Red Planet: The Most Frightening Thing on Mars Is an Order

Charles Chilton’s Journey into Space turned a voyage to Mars into a chilling story of obedience, free will—and what happens when a man stops being himself.

In 1954, millions of BBC listeners climbed aboard the Discovery and set out for Mars.

What they found there was far more disturbing than little green men.

Charles Chilton’s Journey Into Space: The Red Planet begins as a grand adventure into the unknown and gradually becomes something darker: a story about strange signals, altered behavior, unquestioning obedience, and the terrifying possibility that the person beside you may no longer be acting of his own free will.

In this edition of Listen with Gilbert, we return to one of British radio’s great science-fiction serials and ask why The Red Planet still works more than seventy years later.

We’ll meet Jet Morgan, Doc Matthews, Mitch and the wonderfully human Lemmy Barnett; explore Chilton’s remarkable use of suspense and the weekly cliffhanger; and hear how radio transformed a few voices, footsteps, electronic sounds and moments of silence into an entire Martian world.

But beneath the adventure lies a more unsettling question.

What happens when obedience replaces conscience?

Against the background of the Cold War, The Red Planet becomes a story about brainwashing, conformity, totalitarian power and the loss of individual will. And viewed through a Chestertonian lens, its conflict becomes larger still: the human person versus the system—the gloriously imperfect, unpredictable individual against a world in which everyone obeys perfectly.

Perhaps that is why Chilton’s Mars remains so unnerving.

The most frightening thing waiting there isn’t a monster.

It’s an order.

About Listen with Gilbert

Listen with Gilbert is Chesterton Radio’s guide to the extraordinary world of classic radio.

We don’t simply tell you whether an old broadcast is worth hearing. We listen more closely—exploring the writers and actors, the history surrounding the production, the techniques that made radio such a powerful storytelling medium, and the larger ideas hiding beneath the sound effects and microphone hiss.

Sometimes Gilbert Chesterton joins the conversation directly. Sometimes he merely pulls up a chair.

Either way, the purpose is the same: to rediscover remarkable radio and discover why it still has something to say.
