The Snark Returns at Eleven
Boris Karloff—the voice behind some of cinema’s most memorable monsters—goes hunting for something altogether stranger.
In this Chesterton Radio deep dive, we explore Lewis Carroll’s wonderfully bewildering The Hunting of the Snark: the Bellman and his blank map, the Baker and his terrible warning, the mysterious Boojum, Henry Holiday’s illustrations, and a poem that begins as nonsense and somehow wanders toward the edge of the abyss.
But there is another story here.
Karloff’s reading of The Hunting of the Snark was a regular part of Fr. Robert Griffin’s Children’s Hour, heard at 11:00 AM Saturdays on WSND-FM at Notre Dame. For a generation of listeners, great literature could simply appear on the radio on Saturday morning because someone thought children ought to hear it.
So today at 11:00 AM Central, Chesterton Radio will do something wonderfully old-fashioned.
We’re putting the Snark back on the radio on Saturday morning.
