A boat disappears into the darkness of the Sea of Galilee. The wind rises. Waves break over the sides. Experienced fishermen begin to believe they may not survive.
And Jesus is asleep.
In this episode of The Common Room, we begin with The Storm at Sea, a remarkable dramatization from The Ave Maria Hour’s Life of Christ, and return to the brief Gospel story that inspired it.
Matthew, Mark, and Luke all tell of the night Jesus and his disciples were caught in a violent storm. But the story is stranger—and more profound—than the familiar lesson about having faith during the “storms of life.”
Because after Jesus wakes, rebukes the wind, and stills the sea, the disciples are left with a question:
“Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”
That question is the heart of our Deep Dive.
We compare the three Gospel accounts, explore the remarkable image of the exhausted Jesus sleeping in the boat, and look backward to Psalm 107, where terrified sailors cry out to God—and God makes the storm still.
We also listen closely to what old-time radio could do with this story. Wind. Water. Frightened voices. Darkness created entirely in the imagination—and then, suddenly, silence.
Along the way, we rediscover The Ave Maria Hour, part of a largely forgotten era when ambitious religious radio dramas brought the stories of Christianity into millions of homes.
