Before streaming, before podcasts, before algorithms decided what we should hear next, there was something wonderfully simple.
There was a voice in the dark.
A story coming through the radio.
A little station somewhere out there, keeping the light on.
Welcome to Chesterton Radio.
Chesterton Radio is a listener-supported world of classic radio drama, original storytelling, literature, faith, history, ideas, music, and conversation — broadcasting from our imaginary Little Station on Commercial Street in Atchison, Kansas, to listeners around the world.
The station exists.
And it doesn’t.
There isn’t really a studio behind a storefront on Commercial Street with an ON AIR light glowing in the window. But the programs are real. The stories are real. The listeners are real.
And increasingly, we like to imagine that everything you hear on Chesterton Radio comes from that little station.
A place where someone is always awake.
A place where the coffee pot is probably still on.
A place where the door is never quite locked.
Come inside.
Chesterton Radio isn’t a single program. Think of it as a little broadcasting world with several rooms.
In The Common Room, we pull up a chair for conversations about books, writers, history, faith, culture, and the permanent things. Chesterton is often there, naturally, but so are C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Dickens, Shakespeare, Homer, Kenneth Grahame, A.A. Milne, and countless others.
The Marketplace looks at work, business, invention, advertising, entrepreneurship, and the strange things our commercial life tells us about ourselves.
Daybreak opens the station in the morning — looking out from Atchison toward Benedictine College, the Church, the country, and the wider world.
There is Morning Prayer, because sometimes the best way to begin broadcasting is simply to be quiet for a moment and listen.
There are our Deep Dives, where an old radio program, a forgotten book, an advertisement, a historical event, or an unexpected idea can become the beginning of a much larger conversation.
And there are original Chesterton Radio stories — mysteries, adventures, woodland tales, and new journeys with some very old friends.
Then there is the great library of classic radio that started all of this: mysteries, comedies, adventures, detective stories, dramas, science fiction, and voices from another age.
And somewhere in the building, the transmitter never quite shuts down.
That’s The Open Door, our 24-hour stream.
This didn’t begin with a podcast.
My own road to Chesterton Radio began a long time ago.
I grew up during the unexpected second life of radio drama.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater was on the air. Old programs were finding new audiences. Stations still had personalities. Radio could surprise you.
Later, I found people who understood that these old broadcasts weren’t simply curiosities.
At Notre Dame, Fr. Robert Griffin’s radio work on WSND showed me how intimate broadcasting could be — one human voice speaking to another person somewhere beyond the studio.
Chicago radio historian Chuck Schaden demonstrated something equally important: old radio wasn’t dead as long as someone cared enough to play it again.
Over the years I kept returning to those voices.
Eventually, Chesterton Radio grew out of them.
But this project was never intended simply to recreate the past.
This is not a nostalgia museum.
We love old radio, but not because everything was better in 1948.
It wasn’t.
We love it because radio understood something modern media sometimes forgets:
The imagination of the listener is part of the broadcast.
Give someone a voice, a sound effect, a few words, and a little silence — and suddenly there is a street, a house, a storm, a detective’s office, a distant planet, or a forest at twilight.
Nothing needs to appear on a screen.
You provide half the scenery yourself.
That is why an eighty-year-old radio drama can still come alive tonight.
And it’s why we believe the same medium can tell new stories too.
Why Chesterton?
G.K. Chesterton spent his life rediscovering things everyone else had stopped noticing.
Wonder.
Gratitude.
Common sense.
Laughter.
Home.
The dignity of ordinary people.
The astonishing fact that the world exists at all.
Chesterton Radio isn’t exclusively about G.K. Chesterton. But that way of looking at the world is very much behind the station.
We are interested in the old things that remain true, the forgotten things worth finding again, and the new things that might still surprise us.
We would rather be curious than cynical.
We believe stories matter.
We believe ideas matter.
And we think there is still room in the world for wonder.
A listener-supported little station
There is no large media company behind Chesterton Radio.
There is no corporate programming department deciding what gets airtime.
There is simply this little station and the people who listen to it.
Chesterton Radio is listener-supported.
