Daybreak: The Blue Lamp, Jack Benny & the Measure of Everything

A Sunday morning with the Greatest Commandment, an old-fashioned London policeman, a day at the beach, Lincoln at the opera—and a few remarkable things worth noticing.

Sunday begins with a deceptively simple question: What matters most?

Today on Daybreak, we begin with Morning Prayer and the Gospel of Matthew 22:34–40, where Christ gives us the two great commandments: love God with everything we have, and love our neighbor as ourselves.

Then we cross the Atlantic for today’s Sunday Play, The Blue Lamp—the classic British police drama that gave the world PC George Dixon and helped inspire Dixon of Dock Green. We’ll explore its remarkable history, its world of ordinary policemen and extraordinary choices, and a cast that includes a young Ian McShane.

For something lighter, Jack Benny heads to the beach. What could possibly go wrong?

And we look around at a few things worth noticing this Sunday, including the Metropolitan Opera’s new Lincoln in the Bardo—a strange and moving encounter with Abraham Lincoln, grief, ghosts, and the death of his young son.

Perhaps that’s what Sunday does best: it restores proportion. Prayer, an old radio play, a great comedian, a work of art, and a few moments to notice the remarkable world around us.

☕ Pour the coffee, settle in, and begin Sunday with Daybreak.
