In 1946, radio tried something almost impossible to imagine today.
Carl Brisson — international singer, movie star and former leading man for Alfred Hitchcock — became a detective. A detective who sang.
The short-lived series A Voice in the Night, sometimes remembered as The Musical Detective, mixed crime, comedy, nightclub atmosphere and popular songs into one wonderfully peculiar radio experiment.
In this Chesterton Radio Deep Dive, we rediscover two surviving mysteries — “The Stolen Necklace” and “The Case of the Worried Detective” — and ask what exactly radio was trying to create.

Who was Carl Brisson? Why put a celebrated singer in the middle of a detective story? Did the songs belong to the mysteries, or did the mysteries simply provide an excuse for the songs? And why has this unusual series almost vanished from the history of old-time radio?
We also encounter one of the fascinating problems of radio preservation: the same surviving broadcast can appear under different titles as transcription discs became tapes, collector copies and eventually digital files.
And lurking just beyond our story is another singing detective: Dick Powell’s Richard Diamond. Was Brisson’s forgotten experiment an unlikely predecessor to a much more successful combination of music and murder?
There is something wonderfully Chestertonian about the whole idea. G. K. Chesterton delighted in discovering the extraordinary hiding inside the ordinary and distrusted a world in which everything had to remain neatly in its proper category.
Perhaps a detective shouldn’t sing.
